Collection: CHALCEDONY

  • Description

A compact variety of microcrystalline quartz, chalcedony is composed of microscopic fibers. It can be mamillary, botryoidal, or stalactic, and is found in veins, geodes, and concretions. It is white when pure, but much chalcedony contains trace elements or microscopic inclusion of the other minerals, giving a range of colors. Its name may derive from the ancient port of Khalkedin in Asia Minor (now Turkey), where there were deposits. Chalcedony forms in cavities, cracks, and by replacement when low- temperature, silica-rich waters percolate through pre-existing rocks, in particular volcanic rocks.
  • Types & Origin

Chalcedony is known for its diverse array of varieties, including Agate, Carnelian, Chrysoprase, Fire agate, Heliotrope, Moss agate, Chrome chalcedony, Onyx, and Chalcedony ice-blue.
