Description

Formed by the invasion of minerals into cavities between and within the cells of natural wood, this fossil wood is preserved from the Triassic Period (200- 250 million years ago). Some trees ended up in river beds or floodplains, whereas floods carried others to the existing forest area. Over time, silica from volcanic ash was dissolved by groundwater and replaced cell walls with chalcedony, a type of quartz. Iron-rich groundwater combined with the quartz during petrification, resulting in the variety of colors found in Arizona Petrified Wood today. The entire forest, including the fossilized logs, was eventually buried and uplifted millions of years later, forming the Colorado Plateau. Erosion has exposed extensive areas of petrified or fossil wood, including whole logs and entire trees. Most of the fossilized logs are from three extinct trees: Araucarioxylon arizonicum, Woodworthia, and Schideria.
