Chrysoprase, a translucent, apple-green variety of chalcedony, owes its color to nickel presence. Esteemed by the Greeks and Romans, it remains the most prized among chalcedonies. Prase, a leek-green chalcedony, has a more sombre hue and is much rarer. The name originates from the Greek “chrysos” and “prase,” meaning “golden leek,” likely alluding to a lighter or more yellowish chrysoprase.
