Description

Revered as a guardian of prosperity and beauty, earning the moniker ‘Stone of Venus’. Dioptase is often mistaken for emerald because of its superficial resemblance, leading to crystals being wrongly identified when sent to Tsar Paul in 1797. Despite its potential as a gemstone with its vibrant color and transparent, prismatic crystals, its softness and cleavage makes it less suitable than emerald. Its name originates from the Greek word “dia,” meaning ‘thought’, and “optazein,” signifying ‘visible’ or ‘to see’. Due to its highly transparent crystals, which can be weakly pleochroic or intensely colored. Found in translucent and massive forms, often occurring in copper veins that have undergone oxidation.
