Dragon Scale is the trade name for iron nodules characterized by polygonal patterns. Typically found in the Hell Creek Formation of North Dakota. These formations coexist with dinosaur fossils dating back to the Cretaceous era, including creatures like the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops. Often found besides these ancient giants, they are distinct from fossils themselves. Composed mainly of iron oxides with a siderite core and a limonite skin darkened by manganese oxides. They can resemble shells, scales, or bony plates, leading to confusion with the actual fossils. The nodules form individually or in layers within sedimentary beds. When the outer layer ruptures, they reveal their distinctive polygonal patterns, sometimes with an eye-like center.
