Description

Jadeite is one of the two minerals commonly referred to as "jade," the other being nephrite. Jadeite, a pyroxene mineral, consists of interlocking, blocky, granular crystals. Although jadeite crystals are rare, they can be found in hollows within massive material, typically short and prismatic in habit. Pure jadeite is white, but it appears in various colors due to different mineral inclusions: green (iron), lilac (manganese and iron), and many others like pink, brown, red, blue, black, orange, and yellow. The most prized variety, emerald-green jadeite, known as imperial jade, is colored by chromium. The term "jade" derives from the Spanish "piedra de ijada" (lion stone), mistranslated into French as "pierre de jade." Jadeite has been revered since the Mayan Olmec culture, 3-4 thousand years ago, and Myanmar remains a major source of jadeite, especially imperial jade.
