Description

Rainbow Moonstone is a sodium potassium aluminum silicate of the feldspar group that exhibits a pearly and opalescent schiller effect. This visual effect, called adularescence, produces a milky, bluish interior light. Moonstone, a variety of orthoclase feldspar, consists of two feldspar minerals: orthoclase and albite. Polished moonstones often display chatoyancy ("cat's eye" effect), where a luminous streak appears through the stone. Rarely, asterism occurs, creating four-legged stars. Moonstone has been treasured in jewelry for millennia, including by ancient civilizations. The most common moonstone is of the orthoclase feldspar mineral adularia, named after an early mining site near Mt. Adular in Switzerland.
