Description

Ruby is the red variety of mineral corundum, an oxide of aluminum. It ranges in color from deep cochineal to pale rose-red, sometimes with a tinge of purple; most valued is blood-red. Its coloration comes from chromium - as small as 1 part in 5000- which replaces some of the aluminum in the structure. Ruby forms a continuous color succession with pink sapphire, the color deepening with an increase in chromium. Only stones with a darker hue qualify as rubies. Name ruby comes from the Latin word ‘ruber’, meaning red. In Sanskrit, it’s known as ‘ratnaraj’, meaning king of precious stones. Rubies can take up to 20- 30 million years to form.
